Muslim NGOs need to be clear about objective of preaching Islam

Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) need to have a clear objective in their efforts to preach Islam, said Assoc Prof Dr Saupi Man, an International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) lecturer from the Faculty of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences.

He said to meet the objective, three basic things need to be done, namely, preaching to non-Muslims, urging the Muslim community to fulfil their responsibilities and preventing activities that could corrupt the community and country.

"These need to carried out by Muslim NGOs to ensure harmony while protecting Muslims from disasters. Muslim NGOs lack the initiative to act.

"There are only a handful who would reprimand Muslims for committing offences," he said in his speech at a forum entitled, 'The Direction of Muslims NGOs', at the Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Perkim) building, here Saturday.

Saupi who is also Malaysia Ulama Association committee member said the NGOs needed to reduce meetings and go down to the field more often to ensure that their preaching efforts had reached its goals.

"Muslim NGOs play an important role in correcting wrongdoing in the community that is based on the teachings of the Al-Quran and hadith."
