Muslims should hold on to decisions made at National Fatwa Committee meeting

Muslims should hold on to decisions made at the National Fatwa Committee's meeting (muzakarah) when faced with religious rulings which have no clear 'nas' (in the Quran).

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said this is because decisions made by the National Fatwa Committee reflected the government's stand.

"There are a lot of views out there, for example on the GST (Goods and Services Tax). Many people give their religious rulings but since there are no clear 'nas', the decision of the National Fatwa Committee is used as they are appointed by the government," he said.

Jamil said this when winding up debate on the motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's opening address in the Dewan Negara, Tuesday.

The National Fatwa Committee, Monday reiterated that the implementation of GST is 'harus' (neither discouraged nor encouraged).

Its chairman, Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Abdul Shukor Husin said implementation of GST should be based on six parameters outlined by the committee.

The motion of thanks for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's opening address was then passed. The senate session continues Wednesday.
