Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan has been remanded for 21 days, beginning today, under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (POCA).
His lawyer, S. Prakash told reporters that Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid granted police the application to remand his client until July 31.
He said he had objected to the remand application as he believed it did not fall under POCA, adding the remand could be extended up to 38 days.
Yesterday, Bukit Aman D7 principal assistant director, SAC Roslee Chik had told Bernama that Sanjeevan was detained under Section 3 (1) of POCA for alleged criminal intimidation and extortion.
Previously, Sanjeevan and his driver, an Indian national, were detained under Section 506, and Sections 384 and 385 of the Penal Code for alleged criminal intimidation and extortion near the Nilai Toll Plaza on June 22.
The MyWatch chairman was arrested following a police report lodged by a complainant that the suspect threatened to slander him through the Facebook social site.
