Six months after a police inspector reported for duty at the Ipoh police headquarters (IPD), he was detained by the police for alleged possession of the party drug, syabu.

The 30-year-old police officer was nabbed at an apartment in Penang yesterday, together with a male friend.

Ironically, the policeman was assigned duties at the IPD's narcotics branch to serve as an investigating officer to rout drug-trafficking rings in the city.

Outgoing Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said during the raid at the apartment, the Penang police found a quantity of drugs on the police inspector.

"The police officer reported for duty at the Ipoh IPD, just six months ago.

Urine tests found both of the inspector and friend testing positive for drugs.

"The case has been handed over to the Penang police for investigations," he told reporters after a handing-over of baton ceremony which saw Datuk A. Paramasivam taking over as the new state police chief.

Acryl Sani's new post will be as crime prevention and community safety department director at the Federal Police Headquarters in Bukit Aman, beginning Oct 20.

Commenting on the arrest of the police inspector, he said the force would not compromise with any of its officers or personnel, should they commit an offence.

"For the police to become a relevant and respected force, we will not compromise...government policies are strict so we will be tough on any individual who abuses drugs," he added.

Meanwhile, when speaking at the ceremony, Acryl Sani said Perak had performed well in terms of reducing its crime rate, adding there was public satisfaction towards safety issues in the state during his reign as state police chief. - Nordiana Barka
