The National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, upgraded recently, has been nominated to compete in the New and Old Completed Building category at the World Architecture Festival 2017 which will be held in November at Arena Berlin, Germany.
The stadium which was built in 1994, is among 17 buildings being nominated for the event, including Kauri Timber Building in Auckland, New Zealand and Grand Pera, Istanbul, Turkey.
The World Architecture Festival 2017 website www.worldarchitecturefestival.com states that the New and Old Completed Building category, among others, is open to projects for creative re-use or adaptation, public space or urban design, regenerated city quarters and town centre revitalisation.
All projects eligible to compete in the category at the yearly festival for architects and interior design professionals must be completed between Jan 1, 2016 and June 1, 2017.
The National Stadium, Bukit Jalil is part of a redevelopment project costing RM499 million in preparation for the coming 29th SEA Games and 9th ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, and the project also includes upgrading and beautifying of the National Hockey Stadium and National Aquatic Centre.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin yesterday, in his official Twitter account, expressed his happiness that the refurbished National Stadium has been nominated for a World Architecture Festival 2017 award.
