As initiatives to help those affected by the earthquake disaster in Nepal, Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) is currently sending one tonne of badly needed tarpaulin canvas shelters.

Its president, Datuk Liaw Choon Liang said after MRCA have sponsored a team of doctor in Nepal Medical Relief Mission they are ready to help the disaster victim by providing them a temporary shelter.

"After we get to know that Nepal have this earthquake incident, we act very fast, we asked members to raise fund. During the first batch of our mission, we already sent medical support to the victim under our charity fund called MRCA Charity Foundation. We also buy a lot of medicines for them.

"Furthermore, since the earthquake had destroyed a lot of household and most of them have lost their house, we also buy some tent for that could help around 1,500 villagers.

"We initially targeted RM150,000 but I would like to thank all members since we managed to raise it close to RM200,000," he said to Astro AWANI adding that the tarpauline canvas shelter will be delivered today.

Liaw Choon also said that besides the tent donation, MRCA will continue funding the medical relief mission by sending medicines to the earthquake victims.

"We have raised this fund and of course we have to donate everything. We also will continue the medical mission like we did before since at the current state they really need it," he added.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on May 12 at approximately 12.35pm local time (3.05pm Malaysia time)

The accident occurred wo weeks after the devastating 7.8-magnitude quake that hit Nepal on April 25.
