Netizens rally on social media in support of taxi-like service Uber
Netizens rally in favour of transport company Uber one day after it started an online campaign inviting Malaysian to voice their support in ensuring the smooth sailing of its operations in the country.
Uber has been under fire by the authorities who promised to conduct a nationwide crackdown on its service on Oct 1.
JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad had earlier said the offenses came under Section 16 of the Land Public Transportation Act and Section 23 of the Road Transport Act.
Individuals and companies found operating the taxi-like service could be fined not exceeding RM10,000, imprisonment up to one year or both, if found guilty.

Meanwhile, Federal Territory and Selangor Taxi Operators Association president Datuk Aslah Abdullah said the Uber taxi-like service should be cancelled as it does not have the proper licensing to operate in Malayia.
“It is better to cancel the Uber service. They do not have any license. It is hard if anything were to happen. We do not know about the passengers’ liabilities,” said Aslah.
Kepong Taxi Drivers Association president Gor Bachan Singh had a different opinion altogether.
“It’s hard to stop their services. Even if we succeeded, they will still try to operate in different ways,” he said.
