New communication system during emergency needed - Ahmad Shabery

The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been asked to come up with a new emergency communication system.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the recent floods in Kuantan and Kemaman which paralysed the communication system when several substations were submerged under water should be a lesson.

"MCMC should have a new communication system for use during emergency, like if there is war, explosion at the electricity power station or huge floods," he told reporters at the "Sentuhan Kasih" programme in Cherating, Tuesday night.

The programme was held to raise funds for flood victims in Kemaman and Kuantan.

He said the communication system that was used currently depended on electricity, which was a problem if there was disruption in power supply.

"Past experiences are lessons for us. We must look at the existing standard operating procedures (SOP), which relies on electricity resulting in a breakdown in communication service network.

"When this happens, how are we going to disseminate information," he added.

Ahmad Shabery said he had raised the matter to the cabinet and believed the government would look into suggestions to beef up the country's communication system.

"This involves looking into the government’s integrated network, like use of amateur radio, high-powered walkie talkie, which is easier than using mobile phones, to those involve in rescue operations.

"Perhaps, we can also use satellite telephones," he added.

He said integrated efforts should also be made by the relevant departments and agencies, like the Meteorological Department, the Drainage and Irrigation Department and the security forces, in channelling information to the public.
