Malaysia passports will now have a new look with its biodata pages converted to basic polycarbonate materials with personalised laser engraving technique.
Immigration Department Director Datuk Alias Ahmad said the change is among the department's efforts to maximize the safety of biodata pages. The pages were laminated before.
"These reforms involve substantial changes in the passport production system and have caused delays in the passport issuance process because of unavoidable disruptions,” he said.
He also said that the restoration of this system disruption is actively being conducted by the department with Datasonic and Heitech Padu vendors.
“The process of switching to this new technology involved the entire nation and is expected to be completed by June this year,” he said.
