A baby girl, believed to be a newborn, was found with the umbilical cord still intact in a bag left by the roadside near the Kampung Tenglu Laut Community Hall here, yesterday.

Mersing district police chief Supt Cyril Edward Nuing said the baby was found in a bag wrapped in batik cloth, at about 2 pm.

“Police received a tip-off that a baby was found by the roadside near the community hall.

“The baby was later rescued and sent for a check-up to the Tenglu Health Clinic, before being sent to Mersing Hospital for further treatment," he said in a statement here.

The baby, believed to be only 24 hours old, is now reported to be in a stable condition.

The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Cyril also urged the public with information on the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.
