Ford has plans to produce all new 2.0-litre diesel engines for both cars and commercial vehicles. By Jerrica Leong
With the award winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine under their belt, Ford is looking to create and mass produce a 2.0-litre diesel engine with low carbon emission for both cars and commercial vehicles.
Dagenham London is the place where Ford has based their production plant for their new diesel technology. An additional £190 million was invested into the site recently to produce an all-new technology 2.0-litre diesel engine for cars and commercial vehicles.
Ford had previously invested £287 million into phase one of the new engine programme with support from the UK Government’s Regional Growth Fund. Adding in the new amount known as phase two of the project, the total of £475 million and underlines Ford’s commitment to high-tech engine manufacture at Dagenham.
The first phase of investments relates to the production of the state-of-the-art low carbon 2.0-litre for Ford’s commercial vehicles globally. Ford hopes that the first phase engines would roll off the line by 2015 and installation into their commercial vehicles from 2016 onwards. While the engines for passenger cars, also known as phase two, will head into production in 2017 and hopefully available in cars by 2018.
This new low carbon London-developed 2.0-litre advanced diesel engine will deliver dramatically low NOx emissions that would work well with the London Mayor’s proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone plans. Not only does this investment show Ford’s commitment to the UK, it will also be creating 300 new jobs.
