Nine primary schools in Sarawak, with a total enrolment of 824 students, were closed today due to the floods.

A spokesman at the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, Major Ismail Mahedin, from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, said five of the schools were in Bintulu and four in Miri.

The schools are SK Kuala Sigu, SK Genaan, SK Bukit Balai, SK Bukit Mawang, SK Kuala Binyo, SK Rumah Ranggong, SK Long Sobeng, SK Kuala Bok and SK Long Luyang, he said.

However, he said no evacuation centre was opened or residents evacuated yet as the situation was still under control. -- Bernama
