The cost for obtaining a driving licence for cars and motorcycles will remain the same after new regulations required learner drivers to sit for only one test on road traffic regulations.

Road Transport Department (RTD) director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the decision was made after a study on restructuring the examination and curriculum to combine both tests.

"The price of courses remains the same," he said when met at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory RTD Day celebration here today.

Ismail had earlier hinted a reduction in the rate of fees following the Transport Ministry's announcement that individuals taking car and motorcycle tests now needed to sit for only one road traffic examination.

In this regard, RTD has set a ceiling price of RM350 for B2 licence (motorcycle) course on driving institutes while the rate for manual cars is RM1,150 and RM1,250 for automatic cars.

In another development, Ismail said RTD is working with the Customs Department on cases of illegal entry of cars from tax free islands such as Labuan and Langkawi to the mainland which resulted in leakages in the Customs' tax system.
