No directive banning non-Muslim students wearing 'baju kurung' uniform

The directive prohibiting non-Muslim students from wearing the 'baju kurung' uniform to school is not in line with the Education Ministry's policy to promote unity, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also the education minister, said school administrations should not make such a ruling as it could lead to a negative perception by the public.

"There is no directive from the ministry for schools to prevent non-Muslim students from wearing the baju kurung.

"But some schools have their own ruling. I think this is not right and the ministry has asked the schools concerned to rectify the situation as it is feared this could lead to misconception," he said.

Muhyiddin was speaking to reporters after launching the Kampung Baru Comprehensive Development Master Plan here today.

He was commenting on media reports that a 15-year-old student was allegedly prevented from wearing the baju kurung by a school which regarded the attire as being only for Malay female students.

In the media reports, the school administration said only Malay students were allowed to wear the baju kurung.
