No more using printed paper to pack food from Jan 1

State Health Committee chairman, Jafperi Othman said based on toxicological studies, printed paper was found to contain harmful chemicals that could cause cancer.

"Carcinogens in the ink can affect a person's digestive system, and increase toxicity in the human body," he said.

He was speaking after distributing free food wrapping paper to 100 traders at the Behor Lateh morning market here Sunday in conjunction with the campaign to prohibit the use of printed paper.

State Health director Dr Zaini Hussin was also present.

Jafperi said errant food operators would face legal action under Regulation 36 of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.

"The ruling will be imposed on the failure of the operator to comply with the requirements regarding the provision, packing and serving of food. It can carry a maximum fine of RM10,000, or imprisonment not exceeding two years, or both," he said.

Jafperi said the campaign which began on June 19 aimed to educate and create awareness among food operators and the public on the dangers of using printed paper, such as newspaper, for packing food.

"Among the locations visited so far are the night markets in Kuala Sanglang, Kaki Bukit, Abi, Arau, Kangar, and morning markets in Arau, Simpang Empat, and today in Behor Lateh," he said.
