Nurul Izzah Anwar is being detained overnight at the Jinjang police lock-up to facilitate investigations against her.

A court hearing to extend the remand on the PKR vice-president will be held tomorrow at 10am, party communications director Fahmi Fadzil said today.

He said, Nurul Izzah is being held under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for her Opposition Leader’s speech during the King’s debate in Parliament, in which authorities claimed was seditious in nature.

In her March 10 speech, Nurul Izzah had questioned and criticised the judiciary pertaining to her father and Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction.

Nurul Izzah’s lawyer, R. Sivarasa slammed the police for the Lembah Pantai MP’s arrest, describing the move as going against the basic principle of democracy.

“The basic principle of democracy calls for parliamentarians to be given immunity when speaking in Parliament.

“If we don’t even have that (immunity), there’s no point in having a Parliament. We might as well shut Parliament down and be authoritarian… no need to talk about democracy anymore,” he said.
