KUALA LUMPUR:Motions or Bills (RUU) that bring benefits to the people are always supported by opposition MPs, said Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Fahmi Fadzil.
Supporting his argument, Fahmi said during the previous Dewan Rakyat session, the opposition MPs supported the bill related to COVID-19.
He explained that what the opposition MPs are doing is carrying out the task of checking and balancing for every motion brought.
"We need to scrutinise the task or function of the opposition in Parliament is to check and balance the process.
"If there is no opposition at all, then anything that is brought to the attention of Parliament, there will be no one to raise or scrutinise in more depth.
"I give an example of an issue raised by many frontliners, they said to get some allowance, they have to fill up a lot of forms. It is things like this that need to be scrutinised by the government," he told Astro AWANI.
In this regard, Fahmi called on all parties to change the perception of the opposition which is often associated with negative things.
He said more opinions can be heard if a motion is tabled and debated in Parliament.
"When something is discussed in Parliament, it gives more chances to have more voices heard.
"In the event of an emergency.. there is no parliamentary session, no opportunity to hear in the assembly about the pros and cons of something, then it becomes like a dictatorship.
"But Alhamdulillah Ke Bawah Duli Tuanku said there was no need for an emergency, so the parliamentary session could continue," said Fahmi who is also PKR Communications Director.
He also stressed that the main issue at the moment is not to change the government, instead, efforts to face the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Sunday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah said that there was no need to declare a state of emergency in this country or any part of Malaysia at this time.
His Majesty, on the other hand, reminded politicians to immediately stop all politicking that could disturb the stability of the country's government.
