Ops Selamat records 195 road fatalities in 12 days

There were 178 fatal road accidents involving 195 deaths recorded nationwide in 12 days of the Ops Selamat road safety operation since it was launched on July 21 in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season.
Federal Traffic police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said during the period, 15,122 accidents were reported.
Based on the statistics for the 12 days, motorcyclists made up the largest number of fatalities at 112 deaths or 57 percent followed by car occupants with 48 deaths (25 percent).
"There were 167,456 summonses issued to traffic offenders including using the emergency lane 2,139 summonses and overtaking on double lines 1,316 summonses," he said in a statement Saturday.
On the rate of accidents on major roads, he said municipal roads recorded 6,222 cases followed by federal road 3,546 and state roads 2,797 cases.
The 15-day Ops Selamat will end on Monday.
