Pahang Mufti's statement: Police to investigate under Sedition Act

Police have opened investigation papers under the Sedition Act over Pahang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Osman's statement on the term 'kafir harbi' (non-believers who are against Islam).

Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said a police report had been received in Penang and another in Kuala Lumpur over the mufti's statement.

"Let police conduct the investigation first, (people should) stop giving comments on the Pahang mufti's statement.

"When the investigation is completed, we will refer the investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action," he told reporters after the handing-out of crash helmets to traffic policemen, here, Wednesday.

Also present were Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh, Bukit Aman police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Datuk Mahamad Akhir Darus, and Celcom Axiata Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly.

On another development, Khalid confirmed that police today recorded a statement from former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his remark likening Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to Ugandan third president and dictator, Idi Amin.

"This is the eighth case we are investigating against Dr Mahathir.

"It's our responsibility to carry out the investigations," he said.

The recording of the statement was conducted by Bukit Aman police in Dr Mahathir's office at the Perdana Leadership Foundation building in Precinct 8, Putrajaya.

Dr Mahathir had allegedly made the remark in his speech at the recent Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seat by-election.
