Parliamentary suspension: Agong has decreed, government's action inaccurate - Opposition

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition bloc are of the view that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree regarding the suspension of Parliament gives a clear picture that the government's action is inaccurate.

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said His Majesty had expressed the view that the proclamation of emergency did not mean that the parliamentary session should be suspended.

“So, this is the way we express our protest to the decision to suspend Parliament even though the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has given the view that this emergency does not mean that the sitting of Parliament can be suspended.

"So, (we) are just waiting for the Prime Minister's decision.

"If we know in the rules of the Constitution and the institutions of our country, that when the Yang di-Pertuan Agong gives such a view, it means it gives a clear picture that the government's view is inaccurate to suspend Parliament," he said.

He said this in an entry on his official Facebook page after holding a meeting with opposition MPs on Monday in a symbolic move to call for the resumption of Parliamentary sittings.

In a related development, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said the meeting also decided to continue protesting the declaration of a state of emergency as there was no reasonable basis, especially the suspension of Parliament.

He described the suspension of Parliament as making Malaysia seem similar to Myanmar.

"So, when the prime minister reprimands Myanmar, Myanmar should also be able to reprimand the prime minister for not having a reasonable reason to suspend Parliament," he added.

Earlier, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong through a statement from Istana Negara was of the view that Parliament could convene during the emergency period on a date deemed appropriate on the advice of the Prime Minister.
