The Prevention of Terrorism Bill (Pota) which was passed at the Dewan Rakyat showed the power of solidarity among the backbenchers in efforts to curb violence.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said even though there were several objections relating to some clauses in the bill by the opposition, the passing of Pota showed that such laws were very much needed.
"Although there are objections on some clauses, the solidarity of these (government) Members of Parliament ensured Pota is passed in the interests of the people and country," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.
The Pota Bill 2015 was passed without amendments at the Dewan Rakyat at 2.25am after it was debated on for 12 hours.
Ahmad Zahid reiterated that Pota would definitely safeguard human rights as requested by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and would not sideline the legal elements that had become a cause for concern for some.
