PDRM to increase women intake by 30% in five years

The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will increase its women intake by 30 per cent in five years.

Acting Deputy Inspector General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Fuzi Harun said the PDRM had made it a priority to recruit more policewomen.

"For the cadet inspector intake in January next month, 200 of the 600 candidates must be women.

"This is to increase and empower the participation of women in the service," he told reporters after the launch of a seminar for policewomen by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim, Wednesday.

Mohd Fuzi said the PDRM currently has 113,666 personnel and of this number, 11.7 per cent are women.

Meanwhile, Rohani said women should learn the art of self defence to protect themselves and their families.

Such knowledge could help prevent women from becoming victims of crime such as snatch thefts and domestic violence, she said.

She said domestic violence cases have recorded an increase from about 2,000 last year to 3,000 as of November this year.
