GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state government plans to empower the homeless by establishing the Penang Homeless Transit Centre where training and various workshops would be held for them.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government has allocated RM4.4 million for the construction of the centre, which will be under the purview of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) when operational in August
"This centre is a facility that shows that we care about the needs of the community, especially the homeless who deserve our attention," he told reporters after officiating at the centre today.
The centre built on a 1,370 square metre-site belonging to Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is equipped with an office, workshop/seminar rooms, dormitories for men (60 beds) and women (18 beds), a cafeteria, a prayer room, a lounge, toilets, a medical examination room and facilities for the disabled.
Chow said the homeless transit centre could also be a platform for different parties to channel their contributions such as funds, expertise, materials and services.
Meanwhile, State Environment and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said a homeless person can stay for a maximum of 14 days and must follow the routine set by the state JKM staff.
He said the centre would also help the homeless to seek employment, whether as cleaners, gardeners or security guards.
Osman Abdullah, 49, a homeless person who works as a security guard at a private university, said the transit centre is great way to help the needy.
"I have been going to Anjung Singgah, but when it is crowded, I have to take shelter on the roadside. I do not have a car and I just walk everywhere.
"I am a convert and was shunned by my family for a long time after I got married. This is an excellent place for me take a breather," he said.
