Penang motorists detained for driving under influence

The police detained six suspected traffic offenders early today, for driving under the influence of alcohol during 'Ops Selamat' here.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (Northern Zone) Ops Selamat 9/2016 Subtech Commander, Supt Ahmad Adnan Basri said the motorists were picked up at two different locations, namely Persiaran Bayan Indah, Bayan Baru and Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu expressway heading from the city centre to Bayan Baru.
"Each of them had a reading of above 80mg, and the offence will be under section 45(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
The two-hour operation which began at 2am, saw the issuance of 66 summonses for various offences.
The offences included beating the red light (two), vehicle without brake light (one), registration number plates not following specifications (19), driving without licence (four), driving with expired licence (one), no road tax (four), no insurance coverage (one) and not wearing helmet (one).
'Ops Selamat', which began on June 29 will end on July 13. It is aimed at ensuring the safety of road users during the Aidilfitri celebrations.
