GEORGE TOWN: A total of 122 dengue cases were reported in Penang for the 45th Epidemiology Week (ME45) between Nov 5 and 11, an increase of 30 cases compared to the 92 reported in the previous week.
In its statement today, the State Health Department said the cumulative cases reported for the same period showed a spike of 122 cases, bringing the total to 6,608 compared to 6,486 for ME44, with nine fatalities due to complications.
"The Barat Daya district recorded the highest number of cases at 45, followed by Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) 31 cases; Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) 23 cases; Timur Laut (17) and the lowest was six cases in Seberang Perai Utara (SPU).
"The SPT district recorded the highest cumulative cases at 3,244 cases; SPS (1,155); Timur Laut (1,125); Barat Daya (651) and SPU, 433 cases," said the statement.
According to the statement, on the first day of the ME46 yesterday 30 new cases were reported in five districts bringing the cumulative figure to 710.
The dengue hot spots in the state include Taman Impian Ria (Zon B) and Taman Juru in the SPT district, which also recorded an uncontrolled epidemic in Taman Perindustrian Beringin (A), while the rest of the districts are under control.
Meanwhile, only one case of chikungunya was recorded in the Barat Daya district in ME45, with a cumulative total of 38 cases.
The State Health Department advised the public to ensure there is no stagnant water anywhere in their home and to keep their surroundings clean to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
