Households along the rivers and coastal areas in the state are expected to experience the high-tide phenomenon for the second time from Nov 14 to 17.

State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Mat Hassan said more than 4,000 houses would be affected and residents were advised to be vigilant about the weather and sea conditions, especially fishermen.

A similar phenomenon hit residents in the area from Oct 17 to 21. However, the damage to and loss of properties were minimal.

"One approach is to provide a place in a relatively high area to keep important belongings and valuables in the event of the tide water inundating the houses.

"Residents are also advised to follow the directives issued by the authorities including moving to safer places to avoid any untoward incident," he told Bernama today.

Mat who is also Kuala Perlis assemblyman, said the Civil Defence Department (APM) would also be prepared and on high alert to be dispatched to the affected areas which involved over 20km stretch from Kuala Perlis to Kuala Sungai Kuala Sanglang, including Kuala Sungai Baru and Kuala Sungai Padang.

Meanwhile, South Perlis Fishermen's Association chairman Romly Sabu said about 2,000 fishermen in the state were advised to give priority to safety and to refrain from carrying out activities at sea.

"Usually there are a lot of shrimp and crabs during high tide. However, I really hope the fishermen, especially those who use small boats, will not be too eager to make a catch as their lives are more precious," he said. -- BERNAMA
