Pakatan Harapan (PH) had recently agreed to fulfill a promise in its General Election Manifesto to allow borrowers of the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) to defer repaying their loans only after their monthly salary exceed RM4,000.
However, former Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng, said the formula presented by PTPTN which was approved by the Ministry of Finance could not be implemented due to the collapse of the PH government.
"The formula from PTPTN as approved by the Ministry of Finance requires the government to bear additional loans on top of its existing ones to finance the PTPTN loans.
"Unfortunately, the PH government collapsed before the official announcement on the matter could be made.
"I hope that the promise to allow PTPTN borrowers to repay their loans only after they earn more than RM4,000 a month will still be fulfilled, even if the government needs to bear additional loans," he said in a media statement today.
PH through its manifesto had pledged to allow the deferment of the PTPTN loan repayment to all borrowers who earn less than RM4,000 a month and repeal the blacklist policy on borrowers.
