PKR has postponed by six months its party polls, supposed to be held latest by November 2013.

Delegates of the 9th PKR congress today unanimously agreed to a motion which extends the mandate of its leadership.

The motion was proposed by PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

“The motion was proposed so that the service period at the branches and the Central Leadership Council can be extended for not more than six months as provided under the party constitution until polls can be done,” he said.

According to the PKR constitution, said Saifuddin, the mandate of the Supreme Council of three years can be extended beyond November this year.

Saifuddin added that the Registrar of Societies has been notified of this development.

Saifuddin also said he had received complaints from grassroots members over the 2010 party elections when they had to convene twice -- once to vote for division leaders, and once to vote for national party leadership.

"To change and fine-tune our processes, we will also have to amend the party constitution," he said.
The delegates voted to give the supreme council full mandate to choose the date of the party elections, and to suggest the appropriate amendments to the party constitution.

They also voted to amend the constitution to combine the 2013 and 2014 annual congresses.

A total of 2,500 delegates assembled at the congress which ends today at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) hall. The congress saw the presence of party observers and special guests and representatives from 221 branches throughout the country.

The last time the PKR had its polls was in 2010. The laws of the Registrar of Societies (RoS) requires registered organization to hold elections every three years.

PKR is the first political party to implement direct elections for all positions at the branch and the Central Leadership Council (SRC), including the president, deputy president, four vice-presidents and 20 members of the SRC.
