City dwellers are urged to pay attention to cleanliness to improve the image of Kuala Lumpur, which was recently portrayed as a dirty city.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said, they should stop littering and other selfish acts because KL should set a good example to the rest of the country, being the federal capital.

"City dwellers must cooperate with the authorities to keep Kuala Lumpur clean. There's no point in the government providing first-class facilities if they are not properly used.

"Many residents still have third-class mentality," he said when officiating at the Federal Territories Cleanliness Campaign here Saturday.

The event was joined by the officers and staff of KL City Hall and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, members of the Masjid India Petty Traders Association and Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman Petty Traders Association and workers of companies around Masjid India.

Tengku Adnan also urged consumers to boycott dirty food premises to educate traders on cleanliness.

The campaign programme includes rat eradication, inspection of food outlets, and the closing of the Chow Kit market for cleaning on Nov 12 and 13.

During the campaign, which is aimed at systematically fostering the cleanliness culture, the organisers also meet with traders, business owners and residents to encourage them to take part in every cleanliness campaign.

The campaign is also organised in preparation for the 2014 Visit Malaysia Year, which is expected to attract 28 million tourists to the country.
