PN supports proposed constitutional amendment on anti-party hopping bill - Hamzah

He said the stand was the result of an engagement session relating to the proposed constitutional amendment related to the anti-party hopping bill between PN and Minister in Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar on April 5.

However, to ensure that the amendment can achieve its goal, consensus on the definition and clearer details on the phrase 'hopping' in whatever legal instrument to be introduced by the government was required, he said.

He added that on April 6, the Cabinet agreed that Article 10(3) of the Federal Constitution needed to be amended to allow MPs to draft the anti-party hopping bill in a more organised, detailed manner acceptable to all parties.

"PN acknowledges the readiness of the government to table a motion to amend the Federal Constitution in a special sitting that will take place on April 11, 2022. The decision is one made by a responsible government," he said in a statement today.

Earlier today, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council said in a statement that the coalition will support the constitutional amendment to allow the tabling of the anti-party hopping law during a special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat this Monday as well as stating that the main condition would be that the draft bill of the anti-party hopping law be expedited.

Media outlets had reported previously that Wan Junaidi said the bill would not be tabled at the special sitting on Monday.

Wan Junaidi said in a joint statement with Transformation and Political Stability steering committee co-chairman Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail yesterday that the special sitting would still be held to allow the tabling and debate of the Federal Constitution (Amendment) (No.3) Bill 2022.

The Federal Constitution (Amendment) relating to anti-party hopping will be tabled, debated and passed in another special Parliament sitting that will be determined at a later date.
