A businessman with the title of 'Datuk' was detained on Tuesday on suspicion of being involved with a cheating syndicate on the alleged sale of awards from Kedah for RM71,200 in 2014.
North Klang District Police chief ACP Mohd Yusoff Mamat said, the 33-year-old local man, whose last address was Bandar Sungai Long, Kajang, near here, was nabbed around Damansara at 6 pm.
"The suspect was detained based on the report of a Bangladeshi businessman who claimed his son and himself were cheated by the man who promised to get a 'Datuk Seri' and 'Datuk' title for them with the payment (of RM71,200)," he said in a statement here, today.
He said the suspect offered the victim, 57, and his son, 28, to buy the Kedah award after they became acquainted over the internet in 2014 on the purchase of a luxury car.
He said the activity carried out by the suspect between 2014 and 2015 resulted in the victims losing RM164,200 as they were cheated over the purchase of a BMW630i from the suspect.
Mohd Yusoff said the suspect also caused the victims to suffer an overall loss of RM235,400, (including the payment for the alleged awards) and he was now remanded to help in investigation.
