Police in Langkawi detained a suspect and seized 1.75kg drugs worth more than RM40,000 after raiding a homestay in Padang Mat Sirat, Langkawi, on Wednesday.
Kedah Narcotics Division chief Supt Abdul Razak Md Zin said the arrest of the suspect, a general worker, aged 48, from Yan, Kedah, revealed a new modus operandi in drug trafficking, carried out in Langkawi.
"The suspect would hide the drugs inside a car that would be sent to Langkawi by ferry services so that he need not carry the drugs with him. He will then claim his car in Langkawi. Police believe the modus operandi was used more than once.
"Initial investigations revealed that the suspect stayed at different homestay to distribute the drugs to mostly tourists in the island," he told reporters at the Kedah police headquarters, here, today.
Abdul Razak said during the 3.30pm raid, police found four packets of heroin weighing 1.75Kg, syabu (10 grams) and ganja (11.11 grams) on the table and hidden in the rooms.
He said drugs sold in Langkawi were more expensive compared with prices in the mainland.
Abdul Razak said police also detained a 28-year-old drug addict, a local who lives in Langkawi, and who had served a three-month jail sentence, when he came to the homestay to buy drugs.
