The police have detained a woman in connection with the abuse of her step-daughter on Jan 1, in Port Klang near here.
The 33-year-old suspect was detained at her house in Taman Seri Perantau after the 11-year-old victim's biological mother lodged a police report on Wednesday.
The suspect has been remanded until Jan 10.
South Klang police chief, ACP Alzafny Ahmad said initial investigations revealed the victim was under the care of the step-mother after her parents separated seven years ago.
The girl's father was given custody of the child, he said.
"Based on information by the complainant (victim's biological mother), she became aware of the abuse when her ex-husband told her on Monday, the child was unwell and had bumps near the eyes.
"The complainant then went to her ex-husband's house on Tuesday and her daughter told her the step-mother had assaulted her with a broom on Jan 1.
"Following this, the (biological) mother lodged a police report," he said in a statement here today.
A picture of the victim with bumps near the eyes went viral on social site after it was uploaded by her mother.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang. -- BERNAMA
