An ASP ranked police officer and a Bangladesh national would be remanded for seven days starting today to assist investigations into allegations of receiving bribes from a restaurant operator in order to release his workers who were detained.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Syajaratudur Abd Rahman.
The two men are being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) 2009 which provides for a jail sentence of up to 20 years and fine five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
According to MACC sources, on Tuesday, a Bangladeshi went to the house of the complainant (restaurant owner) to ask for a bribe of RM5,000 to be given to a police officer who was based at the Gombak district Police Headquarters, as an inducement to free his employees who were being detained for not having valid work permits.
He said the two men were detained by MACC at about 6pm yesterday, at Taman Prima Selayang, Batu Caves near here.
When contacted, Selangor MACC director Datuk Wan Ramli Wan Abdullah confirmed the detention, but refused to comment further. - BERNAMA
