Terengganu police are searching for a male youth who was believed to have dumped several copies of the Yasin scriptures on roads in Kemaman and Dungun on Thursday.
State CID chief ACP K.Manoharan said the youth, in his 20s, from Pahang was believed to be suffering from a mental problem.
He said police were still looking for a pink Toyota Vios car used by the suspect.
"We have identified the suspect through the registration number of the car he had used but we do not rule out the possibility he has a mental problem.
"But this cannot be ascertained until the suspect is successfully apprehended and undergoes a health check," he told reporters here today.
On Thursday, there were commotions among road users in Kemaman and Dungun after several copies of the Yasin scriptures were found scattered on several main roads.
They lodged police reports on the same day on the incident.
Manoharan said police were still investigating the actual motive of the youth who is unemployed. The case was investigated under Section 295 of the Penal Code.
This is the second case of such incidents involving the Quran in the state.
In the first incident in Besut, prior to this, residents were incensed when they found the Quran and Yasin were torn up and discarded at the Nasiruddin Shah Mosque in Kampung Raja and a mosque in Limbungan by a mentally-ill man.
