The police shot dead a gunman linked to a gang of robbers which terrorised victims in Selangor and Pahang at a shootout in Persiaran Bukit Takun in Rawang near here early today.
This followed a five-kilometre chase by a police team when the gunman and his accomplice defied an order to stop and instead, attempted to escape in a car from Taman Rimba Komanwel.
The car however, skidded when attempting to negotiate a U-turn at Persiaran Bukit Takun before the gunman fired several times at a team from the Bukit Aman Special Task Force on Organised Crime despite being challenged to surrender.
Gombak police chief ACP Ali Ahmad said in the 2.50am incident, the police returned fire, killing the gunman on the spot while his accomplice escaped into the nearby jungle.
He said a semi-automatic pistol and a bag containing machetes, masks and metal cutters were found in the vehicle.
"We believe many of his accomplices are on the run. Gang members armed with machetes have robbed some residents of the housing area.
"So far, five armed robberies and four house break-ins reported in the area are linked to the gang, according to our investigations which revealed the gunman was linked to a gang of robbers which targeted the Taman Templar housing area in Rawang," he told a media conference at the Gombak police headquarters.
