Police to use allocation for people's security - IGP

In ensuring the safety and harmony of the people, the 2017 Budget has allocated RM60 million to improve the effectiveness of crime prevention efforts in the city, which will include the 'omnipresence' of the police and a motorcycle patrol unit (URB).

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is aware of the financial state the country is currently in, but is grateful for the allocation awarded by the government.

In the budget tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, it was announced that RM12.8 billion will be given to the Home Affairs Ministry (KDN) including RM8.7 billion to PDRM for them to build 12 district headquarters, 69 Commando training centres, as well as to purchase vehicles and equipment.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said to improve crime deterrence measures, omnipresence and URBs are much needed as concerns over the occurrence of crimes are still predominant.

"In my opinion, all policemen require intensive training to enable them to carry out their duty better while increasing their knowledge on how to address crime and criminals, especially in aspects of modern policing that depend greatly on training provided.

"Thus, I hope the allocations could also be channeled for training purpose," he said.

Meanwhile, Ex-Policemen's Association president, Dr Hassan Yusoff who shared similar sentiments said, through omnipresence and URBs, it could also improve the confidence of the public towards the police.

"People are now employing security guards in housing areas as a security measure, but when policemen do their rounds, the public are assured of their security while strengthening ties between the police and the community, as well as reducing crime rate in an area," Hassan said. -- Bernama
