A police corporal has been suspended from work for investigation for allegedly freeing a Nigerian detainee from the Jinjang police lock-up last Monday.
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the policeman, aged 52, was arrested at his house in Jinjang and the police had obtained an order to remand him for three days from yesterday to assist police investigation.
He might be charged in court tomorrow, Ku told a media conference at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters here today.
He said that based on a recording of a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) at the lock up area, the policeman was on duty alone and was suspected to have taken the Nigerian suspect out of the lock up.
Ku said police did not rule out the possibility that the policeman had been bribed to do so.
"We are checking his (bank) account. Based on his record, the policeman had previous record for misconduct and disciplinary problem," he added.
Ku said police had also launched a manhunt for the Nigerian suspect, identified as Osuji Kelly Prince, aged 25.
Those with information on him and his whereabout are advised to contact investigating officer Insp Hamsan Hadi (012-2771619) or ASP Mohd Akmal Abdullah (012-5829300) or the Kuala Lumpur police control centre at 03-21460585.
