A "3-step" display had been contained within the official app in order to indicate how close digital Pokémon were to the user's real-world location.
It would display nearby Pokémon as being one, two or three orders of magnitude away, but succumbed to a 3-Step Glitch whereby all Pokémon in proximity were being shown as three steps away.
That feature's been removed altogether "in order to improve upon the underlying design," and the original feature was also felt to be "confusing"; "We will keep you posted as we strive to improve this feature," app developer Niantic said in an August 2 post to Facebook.
As for the third-party services that many enthusiasts viewed as essential mapping tools, enabling them to swiftly obtain the nearest and rarest Pokémon available, they were actually "interfering with our ability to maintain quality of service for our users and to bring Pokémon GO to users around the world."
"We want you to know that we have been working crazy hours to keep the game running as we continue to launch globally."
"But we'll do our best going forward to keep you posted on what's going on," the team concluded.
