The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) will continue its boycott on Cadbury products despite the verification by the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) that no pig DNA were found in these products.
Based on a statement on PPIM’s website, the association will demand an explanation from the Ministry of Health (MOH) to its earlier claim of pig DNA (porcine) found in two Cadbury Dairy Milk products.
“We respect the statement issued by JAKIM. However, we are of the opinion that MOH should be the one issuing a statement to deny the existence of porcine DNA in these Cadbury products. This is because our action together with other NGOs are based on the official statement given by MOH,” stated the statement.
The statement added that the association will continue to boycott these products should MOH not issue any statement to denying their earlier claims.
Meanwhile the Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) had called on JAKIM to return the people’s confidence towards any halal status certified.
ABIM Secretary-General, Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said that JAKIM should explain the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of issuing a halal certification to the people.
“JAKIM should take the initiative to explain ‘how could Cadbury be issued a halal certificate in the first place?’ and ‘how will Jakim ensure that the same matter does not repeat?’
“Apart from that, I propose for the guidelines to be tightened for companies which are applying for halal certification from JAKIM, in order to restore the people’s confidence towards JAKIM,” said Faisal.
On Monday, JAKIM had announced that the previous claim made by MOH on the discovery of pig DNA in two of Cadbury’s chocolate products was untrue and verified that both products were halal.
On the social media meanwhile, many consumers provided their own opinion on the matter. So were positive, others negative and there were also those who were doubtful with the announcement made by JAKIM.
