The prison inspector was charged with asking for a RM20,000 bribe to influence the court to release an inmate.
An Inspector at the Perlis Correctional Centre was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Perlis on the charge of soliciting for a bribe concerning a case involving a detainee under the Dangerous Drugs Act, yesterday.
Perlis MACC director, Yaacob Angah said in a media statement on Monday that the 33-year-old Inspector was charged with demanding a bribe of RM20,000 for the purpose of influencing the court to release the son of a member of the public pertaining to the case.
The two-paragraph statement, however, did not disclose where the Inspector was detained except to say that the male officer was detained to assist in the investigation under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
The detained son of the member of the public had been charged under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
