The private sector, non-governmental organisations and the public should intensify Independence Day celebrations to show love and patriotism for the country, said social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
He said the Lahad Datu intrusion by terrorists from Sulu, southern Philippines, early this year should serve as a lesson to strengthen unity among the races.
He hoped the government could start a programme and hold activities to raise the spirit of patriotism among the people during the celebrations.
Lee said this when asked to comment on Bernama's observation that preparations for the 56th National Independence Day on Aug 31, appeared bland.
Ex-Policemen's Association of Malaysia president Shafie Bakri also felt that the preparation for this year's Independence Day was quite slow.
"Actually, there should be greater emphasis in this year's celebrations to raise the spirit of togetherness, in defence of our national sovereignty, following the Lahad Datu intrusion," he told Bernama.
He said the theme for this year's Independence Day, 'My Sovereign Malaysia: My Native Land' was apt, and all communities should unite to defend the sovereignty of the country.
