IPOH: Professional make-up artist Hooi Mi Suet is among the Parti Warisan candidates for the Simpang Pulai state seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
The 29-year-old Perak-born, who is also Perak Wirawati chief, said she entered politics to give a voice to the youth and the working class, and to improve the quality of life in the community.
"There are some who question (the link between) my work and politics, for me, it is not a problem because the important thing is that we serve the public.
"We have to do something and not just make empty promises, not to elevate ourselves or chase popularity. I enter politics because the young people need representation and I understand their wants and needs," she told Bernama today.
Recently, a poster of the party's youngest candidate from Sabah went viral and became the centre of attention on social media because of her good looks. '
Hooi, however, described the matter as a challenge to prove that she is capable of contributing to the public by offering the strength of young people and not just relying on her looks.
Besides Hooi, Warisan also fielded a podiatrist (a medical specialist who helps with problems that affect the feet or lower leg), Dr G.Balachandran, for the Gopeng parliamentary seat.
The 45-year-old doctor, who was raised in Batu Gajah, has been in podiatric treatment for 10 years, aims to promote development in Gopeng by providing medical facilities and making the area a health hub to improve the community's standard of living.
"For Gopeng to transform from a village (to a town), we need a more sophisticated medical system so that more people will come and the area develops, for example, a dialysis centre and a diabetes centre.
"The existence of these centres can help Gopeng to develop. I want to bring about this change because nothing much has been done to develop the area and uplift the welfare of the people," he said.
Dr Balachandran will face Farhan Abdul Rahim (PN-Bersatu), Cally Ting (BN-MCA), and Tan Kar Hing (PH-PKR) for the Gopeng parliamentary seat, while the Simpang Pulai state seat will see a four-cornered fight among K.Selvam (PN), Dr Wayne Lee (BN-MCA), Wong Chai Yi (PH-PKR) and Hooi.
Parti Warisan is contesting four parliamentary seats in Perak, namely Kampar, Gopeng, Tapah, and Lumut and eight state seats, namely Malim Nawar, Sungai Rapat, Teja, Simpang Pulai, Chenderiang, Ayer Kuning, Pasir Panjang and Pangkor.
