Pujut state seat: Malaysians cannot have dual citizenship - Attorney General

Attorney general Mohamed Apandi Ali has stressed that a Malaysian citizen cannot have two citizenship.

He said the matter has already been stated in the law.

He was commenting about the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly’s decision to disqualify DAP’s Dr Ting Tiong Choon as its Pujut assemblyman as he had previously acquired an Australian citizenship.

"I do not dare to comment further (about Dr Ting Tiong Choon), but in the law, it is clear that a Malaysian cannot have dual citizenship. It is very clear," he said when met by reporters after officiating the 17th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting of Law (ASLOM), here, today.

Last Friday, the state legislative assembly disqualified Dr Ting after a motion by International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

The motion was passed with a 70 to 10 vote, leading to Dr Ting ceasing to be a state assemblyman with immediate effect.
