The existence of a street aptly called, Jalan Datuk Sudirman in Kuala Lumpur would be seen as a tribute paid by the government to the late legendary entertainer, Datuk Sudirman Arshad.
Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin said the street in honour of Sudirman would ensure his name and his songs remain entrenched in his legions of fans' minds.
“With regards to his contributions to the entertainment world as well as his role in uniting people from various ethnicity through his songs we suggest that Sudirman’s name is devoted to one of the streets around Chow Kit.
“ We hope by devoting his name to one of the streets in Kuala Lumpur, Sudirman will be remembered by the current and future generations as an entertainer who has done a lot of contribution”, said Mas Ermieyati to Astro AWANI today.
Sudirman started his singing career after he was crowned as Bintang RTM 1976 champ on 11 August 1976.
The inimitable Sudirman is to date, the only entertainer named as Asia's No.1 Entertainer apart from holding titles such as Penghibur Milik Masyarakat, Seniman Rakyat and Malaysian Elvis.
The Pahang-born prodigal child was also synonymous as the first entertainer donning the Malaysian flag on his songkok and other costumes during some of his memorable performances.
Mas Ermieyati added the recent launch of Memori Chow Kit Road 2.0 further reinforced her aspiration in making Jalan Sudirman a reality.
The use of the theme, Malaysia...Di Sini Lahirnya Sebuah Cinta is very impeccable that it has become a social network phenomenon and also a hit among the youngsters be it from young adults to school children.
“Sudirman’s songs also become a theme song to youngsters and will never fade every time we have celebrations or any major occasions.
Sudirman was the first Malaysian singer to have organised a free concert at Jalan Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur on April 1986.
