While Malaysians are rife on the social media with their own opinion on the decision made by the Court of Appeal in convicting Opposition leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy, a cabinet minister has stepped forward offering his sympathy towards the leader’s wife.
Housing and Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said that he hopes Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would remain strong during this hard time.
“No wife would like to see their husband or father to their children to be convicted by any court.
“But, no matter how hard it is, the decision made by the judges should be respected,” said Rahman Dahlan via Twitter.
The Court of Appeal on Friday sentenced Anwar to a five year jail term after being convicted for sodomising his former aide, Mohd Sauful Bukhari Azlan, six years ago.
The court however granted him a stay of execution of the sentence with a bail of RM10,000 in one surety and the court allowed Anwar to post bail by 11am on Monday.
With this decision, in accordance with Article 64 (4) of the Selangor State Constitution, Anwar loses his qualification to contest in the Kajang by-election scheduled to be held on March 23.
Article 64 (4) of the Selangor State Constitution states that a person who is convicted of an offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than a year, or fined not less than RM2,000, cannot be elected into the state legislative assembly, even if an appeal is filed.
The case development took place just four days before the nomination for the Kajang by-election. Anwar was also scheduled to attend the opening of the Dewan Rakyat sitting on March 10.
The decision by the Court of Appeal was read out by Judge Balia Yusof who stressed that the decision was unanimous.
Anwar was convicted of sodomising Saiful on June 26, 2008 at unit 11-5-1 Desa Damansara Condominium, No 99, Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara between 3.10pm and 4.30 pm.
