KUALA LUMPUR: The issue of corruption is closely related to integrity and honesty, hence the move to raise salaries for civil servants is not the answer to this problem.
President of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners Malaysia, Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar, thinks instilling moral values and enforcement aspects are more important in helping efforts to fight corruption.
"This is a matter of integrity that arises from self-awareness.
"Salaries in Malaysia when compared to Indonesia and Thailand, can be considered quite good.
"They need to be reminded and inculcated with good values, and the community also needs to play a role in making reports.
"Do not bribe. These officials should always be warned about the dangers and impact of corruption.
"At the same time, the leader who gave the warning needs to set a good example, to be clean from corruption," he said commenting on the action to prevent corruption among civil servants in the AWANI Bulletin, today.
Through observation, according to Akhbar, there were many highly-paid individuals involved in corruption.
"These individuals always feel inadequate and want to live more luxuriously.
"They need to be made aware that if they want to live more luxuriously, there is a right way such as running a business or getting a promotion.
"But raising salaries is not an ideal measure if the purpose is to fight corruption because it is related to integrity issues," he said.
