Recognition as Bumiputera for Indian Muslims needs detailed study - Perkasa

The government has been urged to set up a special committee to conduct a detailed study on the requests of the Indian Muslim community to be granted Bumiputera status for those who were born in this country.
Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (Perkasa) president Datuk Dr Ibrahim Ali said the matter should be studied thoroughly, especially in several aspects including the constitution, legislation, sensitivity and history of Bumiputera status to ensure that no implications would arise in the future.
"Perkasa can only give views and reminders to ensure that any important decisions are not made in haste," he told a press conference at the Perkasa Aidilfitri Open House here today.
Ibrahim, however, hoped that his stand would not be misunderstood by the Indian Muslim community in the country as it was based on what was enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Tuesday (July 18) said the government was ready to look into the requests of the Indian Muslim community to be recognised as Bumiputera, however, a thorough study was needed on how the recognition could be implemented.
