Remnants of JI members traced
The police have identified the remnants of the alleged regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah whose suspected Malaysian member was gunned down in Davao City, southern Philippines two weeks ago.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police were gathering evidence before making the arrests.
"We are giving top priority in suppressing terrorism activities. The suspects involved in militancy are already on our radar," he said on Thursday.
Mohd Noor Fikrie Abd Kahar, 26, from Kedah was killed by the Philippine police at a hotel in Davao City on Dec 14 after he threatened to blow up an explosive device in a rucksack.
In another incident, Khalid warned the public not to get involved in smuggling and drug trafficking locally or abroad for every country is armed with legal provisions for each offence.
"The public should be aware of the negative effects of drug activities for it is widely reported by the media," he said when commenting on four Malaysian men who were nabbed by the Indonesian authorities for allegedly smuggling 44 kg of Syabu and about 2,200 ecstasy pills through Medan and Dumai, Sumatra by plane before transporting them overland to Jakarta last Thursday.
The four in their 20s and 30s, who were arrested along with two Indonesians, are facing the death penalty by firing squad for smuggling drugs into Indonesia.
