The Rohingya Humanitarian Fund is targeting to raise RM300,000 for the Rohingya Muslims who are being oppressed in Rakhine, Myanmar.
Chairman of the programme, Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad, said donation for the fund would be collected statewide for a month beginning Sunday and the collection to be handed over to the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
"This fund is set up to reflect our concern as a Muslim community for the plight of our Muslim brothers and sisters who are being oppressed and killed mercilessly by the Myanmar 's military junta," he said at the launch of the fund here Friday night.
The event was attended by more than 300 people, including some 80 Rohingya Muslims.
Mohamad Ali, who is also UMNO Coordinator for the Klebang state constituency, said the Klebang UMNO would also hand over a memorandum to protest the oppression by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya ethnic to the Myanmar Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Meanwhile in IPOH, Perak Islamic Religious Affairs, Islamic Education and Personality Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Nizar Zakaria said other ASEAN member countries should emulate Malaysia in handing humanitarian aid to the Rohingya ethnic who had fled to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.
This was necessary to put more pressure on the Myanmar government to stop its cruel treatment of the Rohingya ethnic, he said.
He told this to reporters after opening the Hammam Convention in conjunction with the Perak Festival Of Ideas 2017 here Saturday.
